French makeup artist Michelle Manard is credited with creating the first modern liquid nail polish in the 1920s, inspired by automobile paint and using nitrocellulose. As a result, Revlon introduced its first opaque nail enamel in 1932. The "lunar manicure," where the base of the nail was left uncolored, became popular in the 1920s and 1930.
