As a small business owner in the candle industry, I find myself at an unusual intersection of emotions today. Our hearts are heavy as we watch the devastating fires unfold in Los Angeles. Having lived in LA twice, the news and updates of friends has been unfathomable. The images of smoke-filled skies and displaced families remind us of the fragility of our communities and the importance of coming together during difficult times.
To our friends and customers in Los Angeles: we see you, we hurt with you, and we stand with you. The destruction and displacement caused by these fires is devastating, and no words can fully capture the impact on your lives and communities. If you're reading this from a temporary shelter or a friend's home, know that you're in our thoughts.
As I write this, I'm struck by the stark contrast across our nation. While the West Coast battles flames, much of the country is deep in winter's embrace, seeking warmth and comfort in their homes. This duality reflects the complex nature of running a small business during challenging times – how do we acknowledge tragedy while continuing to serve those who rely on our products for comfort?
Our candles have always been more than just products – they're companions in both celebration and solace. I know not everyone has a connection to LA and that it's a cold winter in the majority of the country. As Whiskey & Woof is located in New York, all orders are still being shipped, however I do advise if you are sending a care package to someone in LA, it might be better to send a gift card, room/body spray or reed diffusers. When air quality is poor, I would advise against lighting candles.
How You Can Help
For those looking to support those affected by the fires, including our four-legged friends, here are some reputable organizations providing direct assistance:
- spcaLA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles) Website: spcala.com Currently providing emergency shelter and care for pets displaced by the fires
- LA Animal Services Website: laanimalservices.com Operating emergency pet shelters and coordinating pet rescue efforts
- Pasadena Humane Website: pasadenahumane.org Offering temporary shelter and emergency fostering services for displaced pets
- Best Friends Animal Society - Los Angeles Website: bestfriends.org/locations/los-angeles Providing emergency resources and coordination for pet owners affected by fires
Yet as we continue our work of crafting these comfort-bringing products, we remain deeply mindful of those affected by the fires. We're currently exploring ways our small business can contribute to relief efforts in Los Angeles, and we encourage our community to join us in supporting these organizations.
Perhaps there's a lesson in the candle itself – how a single flame can represent both destruction and comfort, depending on its context. It reminds us to be mindful of this duality, to hold space for both tragedy and healing, for both empathy and purpose.
To our entire community: whether you're seeking warmth in the depths of winter or facing unimaginable challenges in Los Angeles, know that we're here, crafting each candle with intention and care. We remain committed to being a source of comfort while staying cognizant of those in crisis.
In times like these, we're reminded that business isn't just about products – it's about people, community, and finding ways to support each other through both ordinary and extraordinary circumstances.
Stay safe, stay warm, and stay connected.
xx Coco
